Udayagiri Caves: Gupta-Era Art, Architecture and History
Udayagiri Caves in Madhya Pradesh are among the most
important surviving examples of Gupta-era rock-cut architecture and sculpture.
Dating mainly to the 4th–5th centuries CE, the caves flourished under Gupta
patronage, particularly during the reign of Chandragupta II.
The site is famous for its remarkable Varaha sculpture,
depicting Lord Vishnu’s boar incarnation rescuing the Earth. The caves also
contain sculptures associated with Shiva, Vishnu and other Hindu traditions,
reflecting the religious and artistic development of the Gupta period.
Udayagiri is significant not only for its religious art but
also for understanding the evolution of early Hindu temple architecture. Its
sculptures, inscriptions and architectural features provide valuable evidence
about Gupta-era culture, religion and political patronage.
